Energy chooses nonprofit for $5B national lab contract

Fermi Forward Discovery Group will manage and operate the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory that focuses on particle physics research.
The Energy Department has awarded a $5 billion contract to a nonprofit organization that will help run the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory in Batavia, Illinois.
Fermi Forward Discovery Group is affiliated with the University of Chicago. The Fermi lab is located just outside of Chicago.
Solicitation documents describe how the contract covers a range of services such as strategic planning, human resources, financial management, purchasing, project management and IT management.
The Fermi lab focuses on developing facilities and technology for particle physics research. This includes building and operating accelerator and detector facilities.
The lab operates the Tevatron Collider, a neutrinos injector facility; and the Office of Science High-Energy Physics.
