Riverside Research acquires secure hardware provider

Riverside is seeking to accelerate its development of new mobile devices and bring virtualization techniques further out to the edge.

Riverside Systems has acquired a developer of secure virtualization and other embedded products as part of a push to further build out cyber offerings for national security and other federal agencies.

Started in 2014 by Carl Nerup, Cog Systems touts its core Aegis Secure product offering as an enabler of protection for connected devices in an Internet of Things environment. Terms of the transaction announced Monday were not disclosed.

For Riverside, the national security-focused nonprofit is seeking to bring its cyber resilience and other related offerings together with Cog Systems’ secure hardware expertise to accelerate new mobile device development.

"By pairing their best-in-class secure hardware and virtualization technologies with our cyber resilience and AI-driven security solutions, we can deliver integrated, defense-grade platforms that proactively mitigate emerging threats in mobile and IoT environments,” Riverside’s chief executive Dr. Steven Omick said in a release.

Riverside is also pushing to speed up its work to prototype, test and deploy its software on a hardware-backed foundation amid customer demands for secure computing and communication tools.

The idea behind that approach is to bring virtualization further from cloud environments to the edge.

“By combining our secure hardware solutions with Riverside Research's expertise in cyber resilience and software security, we can provide national security customers with unmatched, full-stack security solutions—bridging the gap between cutting-edge research and operational deployment,” Nerup added in the release.
