Leonardo DRS books almost $1B Special Ops satellite contract

Leonardo DRS confirms its $977 million contract award to help manage a satellite and terrestrial telecommunications environment for Special Operations Command.
Leonardo DRS has booked a potential eight-year, $977 million contract to help manage a satellite and terrestrial telecommunications environment for Special Operations Command.
The Defense Information Systems Agency awarded the work on behalf of SOCOM against the General Services Administration’s IT Schedule 70 vehicle and Leonardo DRS was the only bidder to submit a quote, the Defense Department said in its Friday awards digest.
Work will take place over an initial five-year base period and up to three individual option years.
In a Tuesday release, Leonardo DRS said it has provided a global access network to Socom along with commercial satellite bandwidth, operations center support and an accredited terrestrial network.
The new contract covers continued design and manufacturing of equipment to support a worldwide commercial satellite communications system.
Socom wants the integrated system to help distribute information between itself, its components and other subordinate units, and other selected U.S. government agencies.
