Network security bill passes House

The House of Representatives passed the Government Network Security Act of 2003, which requires executive branch departments and agencies to protect government computers and information from the risks posed by peer-to-peer file sharing programs.

These programs are Internet applications that allow users to download and directly share electronic files from other users on the same network.

Such programs could put sensitive information, such as tax returns, medical records and legal documents, at risk. They also can spread computer viruses and worms.
