The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services uses this task order as a mechanism for acquiring commercial cloud offerings.

General Dynamics’ IT services unit has won a potential five-year, $1 billion task order to continue as the main provider of cloud computing infrastructure access to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services.

CMS awarded the Cloud Products and Tools order on Friday and received two bids in total, according to Federal Procurement Data System records. GDIT first won this work in 2020 and has been obligated $886.3 million in task order spend since, according to GovTribe data.

The agency uses CPT to acquire commercial cloud offerings from the likes of Amazon Web Services and Microsoft's Azure Government. CMS buys hardware, software, tools and professional services via CPT as part of efforts to streamline the delivery of healthcare services to U.S. citizens.

As the CPT contractor, GDIT essentially acts as a broker of the IT infrastructure upon which many CMS applications are built and operated. GDIT is also responsible for providing asset and financial management services associated with this infrastructure, CMS said in a July contracting notice to extend the incumbent order.

CMS awarded the CPT recompete order via Alliant 2, a government-wide contract vehicle for IT-centric services and solutions.
