Planet reshapes federal biz with new acquisition
Satellite imagery outfit Planet kicks off a two-part reshaping of its federal market strategy that begins with a new acquisition.
Satellite imagery provider Planet said Tuesday it will acquire geospatial software provider Boundless Spatial in a two-part strategic move aimed at bolstering their efforts to sell commercial geospatial data services in the U.S. government market.
Post-close, San Francisco-based Planet will merge its U.S. government group with Boundless to create a new subsidiary called Planet Federal.
The addition of St. Louis-based Boundless aims to help further advance geospatial data subscription services and adoption of Planet’s commercial products for federal agencies, the companies said.
Both Planet and Boundless count as a federal customer the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency, which is building a second “NGA West” headquarters in St. Louis. Planet said it would retain Boundless’ office there and select staff.
