Equinix grows government footprint in $3B deal with Verizon

Equinix expands its data center footprint in the government market with the acquisition of 29 hubs from Verizon for $3.6 billion in cash.
Redwood City, Calf.-based interconnection company Equinix has wrapped up its purchase of 29 data centers from Verizon in an estimated $3.6 billion all-cash transaction.
The deal adds approximately 3 million square feet of space to Equinix’s data center footprint that now includes 175 International Business Exchange hubs across 44 markets. Equnix’s total data center space occupation now stands at 17 million gross square feet.
Equinix purchased seven data centers in Virginia and the transaction covers close to 1,000 customers with 600 of them in the government and commercial sectors as net new to the company.
Four of the newly-acquired data centers in Virginia are part of Equinix’s efforts to expand its government market offerings for interconnection services.
