Who won May's biggest contracts?

May played host to a steady stream of contract awards, continuing the monthly rise in the number of contract awards we've covered since the beginning of 2013.

To make May’s list, you had to have a contract worth $115 million and above range.

Washington Technology covered 52 awards in May, a sizable increase over the 45 in April, the 30 in March, and the 13 in February.

Of the 52 contracts, 24 were awarded by the U.S. Navy; surprisingly, however, the Navy is only responsible for two of the top 10 contracts this month.

May also saw some international, state and local contract awards, a few of which have made the top 10 list.

So, starting at No. 10, the countdown begins:

10. Sevatec wins $117M contract with Federal Highway Administration

Sevatec Inc. has won a $117 million, single-award contract with the Transportation Department to provide it with  nationwide IT services to the Federal Highway Administration.

This contract is known as the Information Technology Support Services II, or FITSS II contract.

Under it, Sevatec will provide program management, integrated communications, infrastructure support, customer service, capital planning, application software management and IT security.

9. Exelis to run Army communications in Middle East

Exelis Systems Corp. has won a $127.2 million contract with the U.S. Army for the operation, maintenance and defense of Army communications in Southwest and Central Asia.

8. Jacobs wins $128M expansion of Air Force advisory, assistance contract

Jacobs Engineering Group has won a $128 million contract option to provide advisory and assistance services to the Air Force at Eglin Air Force Base in Florida.

The option was awarded under the Technical and Engineering Acquisition Support 6 contract.

The scope of work includes systems engineering and integration support for air-delivered munitions

7. Three contractors win $200M VA contract for mobile technologies

Three companies have won a $200 million task order contract with the Veterans Affairs Department to provide mobile devices and cellular wireless services including voice, text and data services.

The winners of the contracts are:

• AT&T Mobility
• A&T Systems Inc.

6. Serco, Virginia complete negotiations for $355M contract

Serco Inc. and Virginia’s Transportation Department have completed final negotiations on a $355 million contract under which Serco will integrate and operate the department’s transportation operation centers and manage its Safety Service Patrol.

5. Exelis wins $435M contract to support NASA's Deep Space Network

Exelis has won a $435 million contract with the Jet Propulsion Laboratory to provide NASA’s international Deep Space Network with maintenance, operations and engineering services.

The company will support an international network of communications complexes that supports interplanetary robotic spacecraft missions performing radio, radar and astronomy observations for the exploration of the solar system and the universe, ITT Exelis said in a release.

4. Northrop wins $555M Global Hawk contract

Northrop Grumman has won a $555.6 million contract with the U.S. Air Force to improve the Global Hawk unmanned aerial vehicle.

The Global Hawk can carry a variety of surveillance and intelligence systems, including near real-time high resolution imagery and other reconnaissance capabilities.

Task areas under this contract include program, business and technical management; engineering efforts including configuration management, data management, reliability, availability and maintainability.

Under the contract, the company will also provide services including technical refresh, diminishing manufacturing sources; studies and analysis; design, development, integration, test and evaluation; retrofit requirements; and integrated logistics support.

3. 29 companies win $855M Marine Corps logistics contract

Twenty-nine companies have won an $854.6 million task order contact with the U.S. Navy to provide the Marine Corps with logistics support services.

This contract was awarded as part of the Marine Corps Logistics Support Services Contracts Program, and is comprised of three suites, the Defense Department said.

The first suite is reserved for 8(a) small businesses, and calls for IT daily support. Six awards were made for this suite.

The second suite also is reserved for small businesses, and calls for quality assurance support and support to Logistics Command Centers customers and subordinate commands. Five awards were made for this suite.

The third suite is unrestricted, and calls for program management and operations, information technology specialized support, training support, program support, distribution/supply support, maintenance support and technical data development support. Nineteen awards were made for this suite.

2. 15 win $900M Navy command, control contract

Fifteen companies have won spots on a $900 million Navy contract for business and force support services.

The companies will compete for task orders under the contract led by the Space and Naval Warfare Systems Center Atlantic.

The Homeland Security Department has made 15 small-business awards under its $22 billion Eagle II contract.
The companies will be competing with each other in the small business track of functional category 2, which covers IT program support. The contract has a five-year base with a two-year option.
