Motorola provides CBP with communications upgrades

Motorola Inc. will provide communications equipment and appropriate technology for the Homeland Security Department’s border security efforts under a $30 million contract.

The award from DHS’ Customs and Border Protection agency calls for the company's Motorola Solutions business unit to provide Astro 25 land mobile radio P25 communications upgrades, technology services, support and other equipment for border security operations along the northern U.S. border.

Under the contract, Motorola will manage the delivery, installation and optimization of P25 radio network technology.

Motorola Astro 25 land mobile radios provide radio security for federal law enforcement and multiagency interoperability, Global Positioning System location and other radio data.

Additionally, the company will be responsible for point-to-point wireless IP backhaul optimization and civil deployment to more than 50 remote radio-frequency tower sites over a period of 24 months.

The project will outfit CBP border agents, checkpoint officers and agency aircraft with secure voice and data communications connectivity along 1,200 miles of continuous U.S. border and more than 20,000 square miles of operating area.
