GSA wants app to take on transportation management

GSA's goal is to be the provider of choice for all agencies' transportation needs.

The General Services Administration wants to build a transportation management application to become the first choice when agencies need to ship a package.

GSA’s Center for Transportation Management said in a notice that the application will be offered under a software as a service model. The service would include business applications software and other end-user software, which would run on a provider’s infrastructure. The service would also need to be accessible from various clients’ devices through an interface, such as a Web browser, according to a request for information released Dec. 4.

GSA periodically buys rates from transportation service providers and allows federal agencies to buy transportation management solutions for their shipping needs. The government ships a combined 100,000 household goods and freight per year and 20 million small parcel shipments per year, according to the RFI posted on the Federal Business Opportunities Web site.

The application is offered on a usage-based model and is billed typically per month for the services used by the consumer, the notice states.

QMCC wants the service to be easy for agencies to use, secure and worth its use when it comes to saving the customer money, the notice states.

“QMCC’s goal is to become the ‘provider of choice’ for all transportation needs across the federal government and create a contemporary world-class portfolio program,” the notice states.

Responses are due by Jan. 8.
