Top government IT projects honored

From health information technology to digitizing archives to making more government data publicly available, the 22nd annual Government Computer News awards honors a variety of projects that showcase government at its best.

GCN, sister publication to Washington Technology and Federal Computer Week, will recognize the top 10 projects and executives of the year at its annual gala Thursday in Washington D.C.

Winners come from the federal, state and local levels of government.

“The annual GCN Awards honor agencies for their outstanding achievements in the application of information technology to advance their work and the services they provide,” said GCN Editor-in-Chief Wyatt Kash. “The 2009 agency winners are now part of a tradition of innovation, excellence and service.”

The top 10 projects are:

• Rapid Reaction Technology Office, Director, Defense Research & Engineering, Defense Technical Information Center, Defense Department Chief Information Officer -- DOD Techipedia Team for the DODTechipedia Suite of Services
• Interior Department, Environmental Protection Agency, General Services Administration and Office of Management and Budget -- Data.gov Project Team for the Data.gov Project
• Army Medical Communications for Combat Casualty Care Product Management Office, Defense Information Systems Agency Personnel Systems Support Branch -- Manpower, Personnel, and Security Directorate for Open Source Corporate Management Information System 
• DOD Military Health System – Defense Health Systems for their Patient Movement Items Tracking System.
• Library of Congress – Office of Strategic Initiative for their Digital Preservation Project.
• United States Postal Service – Business Solutions Services for their Product Tracking system Application Modernization
• The Administrative Services  Department – Division of Finance for the Utah Public Finance Web site.
• FBI – Criminal Justice Information Services for the National Data Exchange. 
  
• State Department, Bureau of Consular Affairs – Consular Systems and Technology for the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative (WHTI): Passport Card and Border Crossing Card. 
  
• Customs and Border Protection – Office of Information Technology for their WHTI.
  

• DOD Executive of the Year: Robert Carey, CIO, Department of the Navy
• Civilian Executive of the Year: Martha A. Dorris, deputy associate administrator, Office of Citizen Services and Communications, GSA
• Industry Executive of the Year: James Lewis, director and senior fellow, Technology and Public Policy Program, Center for Strategic and International Studies
• Hall of Fame Awardee 2009: Tom Davis, federal government relations director, Deloitte, and former congressman from Virginia.
