DOD's acquisition is too slow, official says

The Defense Department's system for buying weapons is too slow for buying information technology, official says.

The Defense Department needs to revamp the way it buys information technology and other high-tech products and services,National Defense magazine reported.

The problem is that DOD’s system for buying tanks and airplanes is too slow when used to buy IT, said Tim Harp, acting deputy assistant secretary of defense for IT acquisition. Too often technology is out of date by the time it reaches soldiers in the field, he said.

Harp was speaking at the Precision Strike Association conference and said he intends to create a“world-class environment” for procurement.
