Harris Marine Corps tactical video subcontract

Harris Corp. won a three-year subcontract worth $20 million from L3 Communications Corp. to provide video technology to the Marine Corps. for training exercises.

The product-and-services agreement is for a next-generation Tactical Video Capture System to support training at various Marine Corps locations across the United States and abroad.

Under the subcontract, Harris Information Technology Services will provide all network hardware procurement and design, and it will install and test the system at 10 Military Operations in Urban Terrain training sites in the continental United States and five other sites. The program is expected to be completed by February 2011.

The system blends real-time audio and video from multiple cameras and training events to create an integrated view of each exercise and the live movement of personnel. The system will provide the Marine Air Ground Task Force Training Command with real-time visualization and situational awareness during pre-deployment training, the company said.

The system also provides quick, after-action reviews of just-completed exercises. The reviews can include insertion of graphics, text and other training details. The system is expected to reduce costs and lower the risk of life during actual enemy engagement by providing information for preemptive actions to stop or contain threats, the company said.

The video training system also has other potential nonmilitary applications, such as for homeland security and emergency response training exercises, the company said.

Harris, of Melbourne, Fla., ranks No. 13 on Washington Technology's 2008 Top 100 list of the largest federal government prime contractors.
