Lockheed to supply Marines with convoy trainers

Lockheed Martin Corp. will develop a new generation of combat convoy simulators under a new $52.5 million contract awarded to the company by the Marine Corps.

The simulators provide an immersive training environment for a variety of military vehicles. During each training mission, the vehicle commander and crews are presented with realistic terrain and threat environments.

Various training scenarios are available, including resupply, patrol, logistics support, high-value target extraction, medical evacuation and close air support calls.

The mission focuses on defending against current and evolving threats. Convoy operations are a leading cause of casualties.

The Combat Convoy Simulator builds on technology developed for the Virtual Combat Convoy Trainer for the Army, Air Force and Marine Corps. It also builds on the Army's Close Combat Tactical Trainer - Reconfigurable Vehicle Simulator.

Lockheed Martin ranks No. 1 on Washington Technology's 2007 Top 100 list of the largest federal government prime contractors.
