Nortel's Zafirovski named to telecom panel

President Bush has nominated Nortel Networks Corp. President and Chief Executive Mike Zafirovski to the National Security Telecommunications Advisory Committee.

NSTAC provides industry-based analysis and recommendations to the president on a wide range of policy and technical issues related to telecommunications, information systems, information assurance, infrastructure protection and other national security and emergency preparedness concerns.

As a presidential appointee to NSTAC, Zafirovski would serve as a resource for the president and his national security team in safeguarding critical infrastructure and telecommunications networks, Nortel said. In this capacity, Zafirovski will participate in a broad range of policy discussions and technical issues related to telecommunications, critical infrastructure protection, homeland security and other security concerns.

Established in 1982, NSTAC comprises industry chief executives representing major communications and network service providers and information technology, finance, and aerospace companies. Appointees include CEOs and top executives from Alcatel-Lucent, AT&T Corp., Cisco Systems Inc., Lockheed Martin Corp., Boeing Co., Verizon Communications Inc., VeriSign Inc., Microsoft Corp. and Motorola Inc.

Zafirovski is a 30-year business veteran with global management experience at Motorola and General Electric. He also serves on the board of directors of the Boeing Company. Born in Macedonia, Zafirovski received the Ellis Island Medal of Honor in 2004.
