STG wins NOAA data center support work

The National Climatic Data Center, one of the world's largest archives of weather data, will rely on STG Inc. for the next five years to operate its IT systems.

Under the five-year, $25 million deal, STG of Reston, Va., will operate and maintain the data center's IT infrastructure and conduct scientific analyses in support of the center's climatic research.

The data center operations fall under the National Environmental Satellite, Data and Information Service within the Commerce Department's National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

The mission of the data center, based in Asheville, N.C., is to manage U.S. global climatology data and information to promote global environment stewardship, monitor and describe the climate, and support efforts to predict changes in the Earth's environment.

To meet its mission, the data center is charged with receiving, processing and archiving environmental data from satellite and observation networks as well as offering access to users worldwide.

STG, which has about 1,300 employees and revenue of $167 million in fiscal 2004, ranks No. 61 on Washington Technology's 2005 Top 100 list of federal prime contractors.
