Cisco Systems Inc. of San Jose, Calif., last week shipped a pair of new products to improve transmission of storage area network traffic outside the data center. It also introduced enhancements to its SAN operating system to help make SAN extension over wide area networks more efficient and secure.

The 16-port Cisco MDS 9216i fabric switch and MDS 9000 Multiprotocol Services Module can handle Fibre Channel over Internet Protocol or Internet Small Computer Systems Interface.

They also come with the new SAN-OS 2.0, which now includes hardware-assisted compression and IPSec encryption, and support for Advanced Encryption Standard, a FIPS 140-2-compliant security standard.
