Lockheed Martin taps SGI tools for Joint Strike Fighter

Lockheed Martin Corp., Bethesda, Md., has purchased about $6 million worth of visualization solutions from SGI Federal, Silver Springs, Md., the government division of Silicon Graphics Inc., Mountain View, Calif.


The order will be used to support Lockheed Martin's Joint Strike Fighter contract, awarded in October 2001 for $19 billion, SGI said Aug. 7.


The contract calls for SGI's Onyx 3000 series visualization systems as well as Silicon Graphics workstations. They will run engineering and design applications as well as visualization software.


"Our JSF approach, enabled by SGI technology, will radically reduce the cost of sustaining U.S. air power by ensuring affordability," said Tom Burbage, executive vice president and general manager for Lockheed's JSF Program.
