IBM Corp. has agreed to fund the study of electronic government for a three years at the University of Maryland, the company announced Feb. 5.

The research will be carried out by the Robert H. Smith School of Business' Center for e-Service. The contribution was made by IBM Global Government Industry Group, a unit of IBM Corp. of Armonk, N.Y.

IBM and the university declined to disclose the financial terms of the agreement.

The investment will allow the center to pursue several research initiatives, such as defining the economic impact of e-services in government, enhancing awareness of the benefits of e-government, and developing strategies to deliver e-government to citizens and businesses.

The agreement will enable IBM to tap the intellectual resources of the center's faculty as well as advanced degree candidates.

The faculty has expertise in wide variety of areas, including e-commerce, marketing, information technology, management and service.

The IBM Global Government Industry Group is a provider of consulting, systems integration and software and computing products.
