General Dynamics Wins Navy Contract for Overseas Infrastructure Improvements

The Navy has selected General Dynamics Corp.'s Worldwide Telecommunication Systems unit for a $102 million project to upgrade the telecommunications infrastructure at naval installations in Europe, Asia and the Middle East, the company announced May 17.

The order, awarded under General Dynamics' Voice, Video and Data contract, is in compliance with the architecture being established for the Navy-Marine Corps Intranet project, the $6.9 billion seat management contract awarded to Electronic Data Systems Corp., Plano, Texas, for some 360,000 sailors, Marines and civilian personnel worldwide.

General Dynamics, headquartered in Falls Church, Va., will assume responsibility for the NMCI OCUNUS ? for "Outside the Continental United States" ? program, including the design, installation, integration and testing of internal and external telecommunications infrastructure to support the voice, video and data communications needs of land-based Navy personnel worldwide. The program will support more than 35,000 users.

Program implementation will mirror the Navy's domestic NMCI program as it relates to design, equipment vendors, interoperability and overall methodology, with the intention of moving toward seat-managed services.
