State and local public officials must make better use of electronic government in order to keep up with citizen demands for more innovative and convenient services, according to a new report by KPMG LLP of New York and KPMG Consulting LLC of McLean, Va.

"Today, citizens expect to get the same services as they receive as consumers," said Ron Salluzzo, KPMG Consulting's senior vice president for the public services practice.

The report, "Leading the Transformation to E-Government III: Seven Things You Need to Know," found that local governments need to improve their e-government strategies.

State and local officials are facing increasing pressure to adopt new technology as citizens demand quicker and improved services. The report discusses areas such as managing new risks, dealing with competition, mistakes to avoid and important aspects of e-government.

"The e-government transformation is under way, but local governments need to develop an overarching strategy," said Jack Miller, KPMG's vice chairman for health care and public sector.
