General Dynamics' board of directors has elected a new member in Richard Clarke, a retired Army general who most recently served as commander of the Special Operations Command.

Clarke will join the board's nominating and corporate governance committee, General Dynamics said Thursday.

As SOCOM's leaders, the nearly four-decade Army veteran led a joint force of at least 75,000 members from all service branches and an annual $25 billion operating budget.

“Rich’s breadth of experience leading military forces across multiple theaters of operation will help General Dynamics continue to deliver the products and services our nation needs to deter and defeat future threats,” GD's chairman and chief executive Phebe Novakovic said in a release. “He is a hands-on tactician and visionary strategist who will be a valuable addition to our board of directors.”

Prior to leading SOCOM, Clarke served as director for strategic plans and policy in the Defense Department's Joint Staff organization.
