BDM Forms Pharmaceutical Team:
BDM International Inc., McLean, Va., has formed an alliance with three companies to pursue pharmaceutical and biotechnology business. The alliance will build on BDM's work with the Food and Drug Administration. Partners in the alliance include NetForce Inc., San Francisco; Stellar Systems LLC, McLean, Va.; and Integrated Data Corp., Rockville, Md. The team will focus on clinical drug development and safety surveillance consulting and solutions.
IBM Develops Student Services:
IBM Corp., Armonk, N.Y., and the University of Minnesota formed an alliance to develop new administrative services for college and university students. IBM wants to develop a self-service system for using the Internet for services such as registration, paying tuition or checking grades.
ReaLogic Acquires TSSI:
ReaLogic Inc., Cleveland, has purchased Total Systems Solutions Inc., Chantilly, Va. TSSI specializes in Lotus Notes technologies. ReaLogic is a consulting and systems integration firm. ReaLogic was drawn to TSSI because it would boost the company's presence in the Washington area, said David Weyher, ReaLogic vice president and practice leader for the Mid-Atlantic region. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.
Pittsburgh Wires Cruisers:
The city of Pittsburgh is spending $1 million to equip its police force with wireless computer technology. Police cars will have instant access to state and local databases and eventually with federal databases, city officials said. The system is being developed for Pittsburgh by Paradigm4 Inc., a New York City-based integrator of wireless solutions. Pittsburgh also is in discussions with surrounding local governments about other police forces linking into the system. The Pittsburgh project is being funded through the U.S. Justice Department's COPS MORE program. The city is matching the federal funds.
Backbone Investment Project Grows:
Juniper Networks Inc., Mountain View, Calif., has raised $62 million in investments for building a new Internet backbone. Investors include AT&T, Basking Ridge, N.J.; IBM Corp., Armonk, N.Y.; Northern Telecom, Nashville, Tenn.; 3Com Corp., Santa Clara, Calif.; and UUNet Technologies Inc., Fairfax, Va. Juniper was founded in February 1996 to design, develop and deliver integrated hardware and software solutions for the Internet.
