Cloudera appoints new government business head

Cloudera, the Silicon Valley-based data engineering software outfit, has appointed a nearly three-decade public sector veteran to oversee its work with federal and other government agencies.

Robert Carey, a former Defense Department principal deputy chief information officer, has joined the company as president of its government solutions business and vice president for public sector. A Cloudera spokesperson confirmed Carey’s appointment.

The principal deputy CIO post was Carey’s last government service role, which saw him be responsible for almost $38 billion in IT spend and accelerate the transition to the Joint Information Environment. Carey also focused on strengthening cybersecurity and speeding up the adoption of mobile technologies.

More recently, Carey was vice president and general manager for the global public sector at RSA Security. His career in industry also includes executive positions at General Dynamics, plus the companies formerly known as Computer Sciences Corp. and Vencore.

Carey is a three-time recipient of the FCW Federal 100 award and was named Defense Executive of the Year by GCN in 2009.
