DOD's other big commercial cloud contract moves forward

The Defense Department’s other multi-billion dollar commercial cloud computing project not named "JEDI" is moving closer to the solicitation phase.

DOD has released a new timetable for its Defense Enterprise Office Solution contract, an $8.2 billion effort to put the departments email and collaboration services into the cloud.

The competition is being managed by the General Services Administration’s Federal Acquisition Service.

In an FBO.gov posting this week, DOD said that a draft request for quotes will be released by Jan. 31 for industry review and comment.

Then a final RFQ will come out in late February or March.

Known as DEOS, this project has been much less controversial than DOD's other much-talked about JEDI commercial cloud effort. The $10 billion Joint Enterprise Defense Infrastructure contract is being protested in Court of Federal Claims by Oracle, who opposes DOD’s decision to make a single award among other issues.

DEOS is competed on GSA’s Schedule 70 and also will be a single-award contract. Both DEOS and JEDI will be 10-year contracts.

While it has gotten less attention, DEOS will be a huge undertaking with 3.2 million end users.
