Survey: Best practices increase network security

A recent Infoblox Inc. survey found that organizations that adhere to best practices are better able to protect their networks.

The survey, called the 2016 Network Protection Survey, designated organizations that most closely adhered to best practices as top-tier. Top-tier organizations, according to the survey, tend to focus on strategic goals, and their two goals are IT agility and making IT a strategic asset. Bottom-tier organizations tend to be more focused on tactical issues, the report said. 

Successful top-tier organizations are proactive about intelligence, being four times as likely to leverage machine-readable intelligence. Top-tier organizations also automate basic tasks and are three to four times more likely to automate routing tasks.

Other key points from the survey results found that top-tier organizations are:

• Three times less likely to understaff their security teams
• 10 times as likely to remediate security events “extremely quickly”
• Roughly twice as likely to have somewhat to extremely satisfied stakeholders within the business

The report concluded with five recommendations for organizations that want better results:

• Get rid of silos
• Pay attention to operational realities
• Prioritize based on risk analysis
• Be realistic about security staffing
• Automate routine tasks
