GOP lawmakers outnumber Democrats on Twitter
We hear that the Grand Old Party is winning the Twitter race on Capitol Hill.
Social media experts told us that Web 2.0 technology helped propel Scott Brown to an upset victory in Massachusetts to fill the U.S. Senate seat once held by the late Edward Kennedy. Now we are hearing Republicans are winning the Twitter race on Capitol Hill as well.
According to a story posted on Congress.org today, Republican lawmakers outnumber their Democratic counterparts by a 2-to-1 margin on Twitter, according to Tweet Congress.
For both committees and caucuses, 123 Republicans tweet compared with 61 Democrats and one independent, according to the story.
But Congress also lets Twitter accounts go stale, just like the rest of the public. Only 132 members actively use their accounts: 89 Republicans and 43 Democrats, according to a report called Twongress, released recently by public relations executive Mark Senak.
Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) has the most followers with 1.6 million, followed by Sen. Claire McCaskill (D-Mo.) in a distant second, with about 35,000, according to the story.
