SAIC to support DARPA's Machine Reading Program

Science Applications International Corp. will help the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency develop the Machine Reading Program under a five-year, $13 million project.

SAIC will design and construct a research framework that will support the development of reading system technologies for DARPA and the Air Force Research Laboratory, company officials said July 7. The framework will support the efforts of research scientists working in the areas of artificial intelligence and natural language processing.

SAIC will also evaluate the performance of technologies developed by program participants.

“The goal of the program is to create general-purpose reading systems [that] can ingest, understand and make inferences from the mountains of text that collectively encode vast stores of knowledge inaccessible to current technology,” said John Fratamico, senior vice president and general manager of SAIC’s Advanced Concepts Business Unit.
