L-1 builds driver's license system for South Dakota

L-1 Identity Solutions Inc. will create a secure driver’s license system for South Dakota under a seven-year contract valued at $8.8 million.

The Stamford, Conn., provider of identity solutions and services will build a complete over-the-counter secure driver’s license issuance system for the South Dakota Department of Public Safety.

The system will provide the state with an end-to-end secure workflow process that adds critical security validations at key intervals of the issuance process to minimize the chance for fraud while optimizing the workflow for an improved customer experience, L-1 officials said.

The system produces credentials by using L-1’s newest security technology. The process incorporates a secure ID workflow for applicant enrollment based on scanning and authentication technologies that validate the documents presented as proof of identity and facial verification of individuals as part of an image capture system.

The workflow components add critical security measures at each step in the credentialing process while providing a faster and more efficient system for obtaining an ID, the officials said.

People who provide legitimate identification documentation will receive a driver’s license or identification card that not only proves who they are, but also can be used by law enforcement and commercial retailers for authentication, they added.

More than 100 million secure credentials are produced annually by L-1’s Secure Credentialing Division, including driver’s licenses for the majority of U.S. state governments.
