Lockheed to direct DOD email traffic

Lockheed Martin Corp. will manage the Defense Department's electronic message routing systems under a two-year, $5.8 million Network Centric Solutions contract award.

In this capacity, Lockheed Martin will operate and maintain official and unofficial e-mail traffic for the Pentagon Telecommunications Center operated by the Army Information Technology Agency.

The center provides messaging services to DOD and is the official traffic system used throughout the department.

In addition to providing unclassified, secret and top-secret messaging services, Lockheed Martin also will provide virus and spam protection, directory, security and configuration management.

Lockheed Martin has been supporting the center and its critical mission for more than 10 years, said Gerry Fasano, Lockheed vice president of information systems and global services. Any disruption of service can affect operations worldwide, he added.

Lockheed Martin, of Bethesda, Md., ranks No. 1 on Washington Technology's 2008 Top 100 list of the largest federal government prime contractors.
