L-3 gets Army handheld mine detector order
L-3 CyTerra developed the technology under the Army's Handheld Standoff Mine Detection System program.
L-3 Communications Corp. will supply the Army with handheld mine detection devices under a new $26 million contract.
Under the contract, L-3 of New York will deliver AN/PSS-14 mine detection systems and associated accessories to the Army.
The order is the fourth full-rate production contract for the product, the company said.
The AN/PSS-14 product meshes ground-penetrating radar and advanced data fusion algorithms with sensitive metal detection to identify land mines. The device is designed to distinguish live mines from metal debris and clutter.
L-3 CyTerra developed the technology under the Army's Handheld Standoff Mine Detection System program. L-3 acquired CyTerra Corp. of Orlando, Fla., in March 2006.
The company, which is part of L-3's Homeland Security Group, specializes in threat detection for military, commercial and homeland security applications.
L-3 ranks No. 9 on Washington Technology's 2007 Top 100 list of the largest federal government prime contractors.
