DOD taps American Systems for non-lethal weapons work

American Systems Corp. won a $43 million contract to support the Defense Department's Joint Non-Lethal Weapons Program.

Under the contract, ASC of Chantilly, Va., will provide analytical support in the technological, operational and programmatic areas, the company said.

The non-lethal weapons program is devoted to coordination and integration of Non-Lethal Weapons technologies and systems that will support the various services. All military services, as well as the Special Operations Command and Coast Guard, are members of the Joint Non-Lethal Weapons Program.

Non-lethal weapons include irritants that can incapacitate or drive away people. One proposed weapon is a running gear entanglement system that would snarl propellers of attacking boats.

The Joint International Weapons and Concepts Directorate supports the non-lethal weapons program by offering science and technology analysis, human effects expertise and acquisition management support.

ASC is a privately held company with about 1,400 employees that offers IT, consulting and training services.
