Xacta Corp. has won a $6.8 million contract to build an automated message handling system for the Air Force, the company announced today.

Under the contract, Xacta of Ashburn, Va., will deploy its message system for 10 major command headquarters throughout the United States, Europe and Asia. The Air Force is replacing its traditional Defense Messaging System with Xacta's secure, Web-based solution.

Regionalizing messaging services gives the Air Force a robust infrastructure and the ability to recover more easily in case of server failures, the company said. A Web-based solution also supports rapid force deployment because personnel can access their normal messaging hub in order to send and receive e-mail as usual.

Following installation and training, Xacta will provide technical support to the Air Force.

Xacta, a provider of secure enterprise solutions, is a subsidiary of Telos Corp., also of Ashburn, Va. Telos has about 350 employees and annual sales of $88 million, according to Hoover's Online of Austin, Texas.
