CSC wins air traffic management task order

Computer Sciences Corp. will continue developing an air traffic management tool for the Federal Aviation Administration under a new, $140 million task order, officials of the El Segundo, Calif., company said today.

CSC will provide software enhancements to the Traffic Management Advisory Tool. The task order also includes options to upgrade hardware, deploy the tool to additional sites and customize software to meet the requirements of individual sites.

The contract will be worth about $140 million over seven years if all options are exercised, according to CSC officials.

The Traffic Management Advisory Tool enables en route air traffic controllers and traffic management specialists to develop complete arrival-scheduling plans. These plans help maximize use of airport capacity by making early runway assignments for arriving aircraft and spacing arriving aircraft so they reach the airport at appropriate intervals.

The tool has been installed at several major airports across the nation, and FAA assessments indicate that its use has increased arrival rates at those airports by as much as 5 percent.

CSC has supported FAA air traffic management projects since 1972, said Harry Part, vice president of CSC's Transportation Systems Center.
