Titan taps $36M Navy contract for UAV operations

Titan Corp. of San Diego won a contract worth up to $36 million to provide engineering and technical services to support joint unmanned aerial vehicle operations, company officials announced today.

The indefinite delivery, indefinite quantity contract, awarded by the Space and Naval Warfare Systems Center in Charleston, S.C., is for one year with three option years.

The award expands Titan's work in unmanned systems, said Gene Ray, Titan's chairman, president and chief executive officer.

"The company's selection to replace an incumbent competitor demonstrates Titan's extensive range of operational expertise combined with aviation systems engineering capability applied in the unique UAV space," Ray said.

The incumbent contractors were Autometric Inc. of Springfield, Va., and Intergraph Corp. of Huntsville, Ala. In 1999 they won the original three-year, $28 million contract.

Under the contract, Titan will provide hardware integration, systems engineering, software engineering and software integration to Spawar and other Department of Defense and governmental agencies. Work will be performed in Charleston and Norfolk, Va.

Titan employs about 11,000 people and has annual revenue of about $1.7 billion. The company has signed an agreement to be acquired by Lockheed Martin Corp., Bethesda, Md.
