Lockheed Martin wins $82M Navy training contract

Lockheed Martin Corp. won a contract worth up to $82.2 million over five years from the Naval Air Training Command, officials of the Bethesda, Md., company announced Aug. 21.

Under the Chief of Naval Air Training Classroom and Simulator Services contract, Lockheed Martin will provide classroom and simulator-based training to Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, Coast Guard, National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration and foreign aviators, flight officers and support crews.

Lockheed Martin has provided these services to the Naval Air Training Command for 14 years. The new contract is for one year and four one-year extensions.

Lockheed Martin will train pilots to fly jets, helicopters, propeller craft and other fixed-wing aircraft. In addition, naval flight officers are trained to use the complex tactical and communications systems found in Navy and Marine Corps aircraft. The officers can then fly from land bases and sea platforms to perform missions worldwide.

About 2,500 pilots are trained each year. Training is conducted naval air stations in Meridian, Miss., Pensacola and Whiting Field, Fla.; and Corpus Christi and Kingsville, Texas.

Lockheed Martin's Systems Management unit, located in Marlton, N.J., won the contract.

Lockheed Martin employs about 125,000 people worldwide and had revenue of $26.6 billion in 2002.
