Electronic Data Systems Corp., Plano, Texas, has developed a system that underwater explorers from the University of Rhode Island use to send and receive real-time video and audio to and from the Black Sea, where they are researching ancient shipwrecks.
In this system, all voice, video and data traffic is combined into a single Internet protocol-based feed, which is conveyed between locations via a two-way satellite link. It also allows other scientists from around the world to tap into the instrumentation, freeing them from site visits to do research.
EDS sees the telepresence solution as having wider markets in other commercial and government markets that could benefit from remote monitoring, such as environmental research and monitoring.
