Covansys snags Milwaukee retirement system deal

Covansys Corp. has won an $11 million contract from the Milwaukee Employees Retirement System to provide a pension management information system, the company announced Monday.

Under the contract, Covansys of Farmington Hills, Mich., will deploy its proprietary, Java-based public retirement fund systems framework, known as Clarety, to improve business efficiency, data management and member services. Websphere, infrastructure software from IBM Corp. of Armonk, N.Y, powers the Java edition of Clarety.

The contract is Covansys' first Clarety implementation at the local government level, said Arvind Malhotra, Covansys public-sector senior vice president.

The system is designed to increase operational efficiency through improved common functions and shared data. It also is designed to maintain sufficient flexibility to address changes in federal, state and city rules and regulations.

The Milwaukee Employees Retirement System administers retirement benefits for active or deferred city employees and participating agencies, which include any board, commission, division, department, office or agency of the city. In total, the system services 27,000 people, including 16,700 active and deferred members and 10,300 benefit recipients.

Covansys, a provider of public-sector solutions for health and human services, public retirement, public health, motor vehicle services and unemployment insurance, has more than 4,800 employees and annual sales of $307 million.
