Jacek Marczyk's stochastic simulation system uses high-performance computing to test a wide array of conditions for hidden combinations that might cause failure. BMW AG and Nissan Motor Co. Ltd. have used the technique to reduce the weight of their automobiles after testing lighter designs for safety.
Gene Allen, a director of collaborative development for the Santa Ana, Calif., engineering analysis provider MSC.Software Corp., has briefed officials at the Army, Navy, NASA and the Transportation Department on the method. He recommended the evaluation be used for any government acquisition in which product failure results in human casualties or significant loss. For more information, see http://www.marczyk.net/.
