The waterproof handheld can then be synched with a desktop computer to provide a detailed, chronological event log of who was assigned where and when. The company was formed by John Ellis, a lieutenant for the Fraser, Mich., Department of Public Safety.

Arinc Inc., Annapolis, Md., has delivered a mobile data computer network for the police department of Prince George's County, Md., that can find license plate information in as little as 10 seconds. Using a cellular digital packet data network, plates are checked against local and national databases. Names also can be checked against national lists of wanted persons and missing children.
