Information technology training is "a strategic element in achieving corporate objectives," not just a support function, according to a recent General Accounting Office study of IT training practices in commercial companies, including IBM Corp., AT&T Corp., Raytheon Co.,Cisco Systems Inc. and Science Applications International Corp.

The GAO found that the companies:

* Align IT training with business goals

* Assess training needs rather than simply fulfilling training requests

* Ensure that training projects are effectively identified and implemented

* Use instructor-led training and technology to deliver training to students' desktops

* Use tests, certifications and measuring business results to evaluate training.
