General Dynamics wins $260 million AF contract

General Dynamics Corp. of Falls Church, Va., won a contract potentially worth $260 million from the Air Force for manufacturing and integrating Theater Deployable Communications Integrated Communications Access Packages, the company announced July 3.


Currently $20 million has been obligated against the contract, which has one base year and four option years.


The communications packages are state-of-the-art ground communications systems that are flexible, portable and rapidly deployable. Through the system, Air Force units can send and receive secure vice, data and video messages via wireless, satellite or other phone and wireline systems.


"In a military theater requiring constant, reliable communication, TDC ICAP is the ticket to the show. It can be built from the ground up in the most severe conditions in a matter of hours," said Ron Taylor, vice president of communications systems for the General Dynamics unit. "TDC provides quick setup for global communication capability for military users at the base and to command centers wherever they may be."


The original TDC ICAP contract, awarded in October 1996 to Motorola Inc., Schaumburg, Ill., was valued at $263.7 million and included the delivery of more than 1,700 units.
