Harris Corp. unveiled May 23 the team that will compete for the Federal Aviation Administration's 10-year, $500 million Next Generation Air/Ground Communications program, called Nexcom.

Team members include top federal integrators Computer Sciences Corp. of El Segundo, Calif., Lockheed Martin Corp. of Bethesda, Md., Raytheon Co. of Lexington, Mass., and Rockwell Collins Inc. of Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

Harris also selected avionics company Avidyne Corp., Lincoln, Mass., for the team.

Nexcom will enable the FAA to multiply the use of its existing air traffic control air/ground communications channels, allowing additional air traffic control sectors and new runways to be added to meet the rapid growth requirements of the nation's air traffic system.

Harris of Melbourne, Fla., an integrator of air traffic control communications systems and weather processing and display solutions for the FAA, will serve as prime contractor for the bid.

The FAA currently is scheduled to conduct a downselect to competitive bidding teams for a Rapid Preliminary Development Effort in October, with the final full-scale development award expected in 2005.
