Doing Business With The Environmental Protection Agency

The Environmental Protection Agency's main concerns are human health and the environment. EPA is focused on air pollution, water pollution, solid waste and regulation of chemical products.

, assistant administrator and chief information officer, Office of Environmental Information Nov. 30, 2001 Philadelphia McLean, Va. Husband Kevin; two daughters, Kelsey and MackenzieHobbies: "I love to play golf, garden and travel and spending as much time around water as possible." "The Corrections" by Jonathan Franzen Bachelor of science degree in secondary education, political science from Shippensburg University of Pennsylvania; master of public administration from the University of Pennsylvania.Nelson lived in Harrisburg for the last 22 years. Before coming to the EPA, she was CIO for the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection and also had served as its executive deputy secretary. Our biggest challenge is fully integrating information across program and government lines so environmental professionals at all levels of government have the right information at the right time to make the best decisions. We are doing this by creating the National Environmental Information Exchange Network. EPA must make several changes to accomplish this goal. We must better define our business and data architecture. Our goal is to complete this high-level architecture by [this fall.] Once the architecture is complete, we must be more structured in our investment review procedures to ensure all IT investments are consistent with this new architecture.I want talent. I want to see highly creative, productive individuals who can help advance EPA's agenda quickly. I expect contractors to work together as part of the same team and to help me achieve our enterprisewide goals while still meeting individual customer's needs.XXXSPLITXXX-Ariel Rios Building1200 Pennsylvania Ave. NWWashington, DC 20460(202) 260-2090 July 1970 Christie Whitman 17,645 The Environmental Protection Agency's main concerns are human health and the environment. EPA is focused on air pollution, water pollution, solid waste and regulation of chemical products. It works with other federal agencies and the states in enforcing laws and monitoring regulation compliance. It sets national standards and issues sanctions in areas where standards are not met. Ten regional offices, 17 laboratoriesXXXSPLITXXX- $7.7 billion $7.8 billion $7.8 billionXXXSPLITXXX-XXXSPLITXXX- Everyone is getting a piece of the pie called homeland security. In EPA's case, $75 million of its 2003 budget is for research to develop technologies to clean up buildings attacked by bioterrorists. The EPA supervised the decontamination of buildings infected with anthrax last fall. Also, $20 million is for continued assessment of the vulnerabilities of the nation's drinking water to such attacks. The EPA does a good job showing you how to do business with it. On its homepage is a link called "Business Opportunities," full of information on everything from compliance to small business opportunities to grants and funding and more. I especially like the "Small Business Gateway," a plethora of information for a small firm looking to work with EPA. A good place to start: . A bookmark gem I found under this heading is the link to the U.S. Business Advisor, providing all types of businesses with access to information on federal government business and transactions. This is worth noting regardless of which federal agency you want to work with. Another nice feature of the Web site is the "Recent Additions" link. Although primarily a collection of press releases, it contains all information recently added to the site and the EPA office to which it pertains. The 10 regional offices are responsible for executing the agency's programs in the states. Specific information about what is going on in these regions may be found under "About EPA." Water, water everywhere: The 2003 budget features many initiatives regarding water quality, including $3 billion to keep water clean and safe, of which $2 billion is to improve local waste water and drinking water. It also contains $20 million for a watershed initiative.XXXSPLITXXX-2002 - $449.3 million *2003 - $493.5 million **2004 - $549.1 million **2005 - $617.5 million **2006 - $695.4 million **XXXSPLITXXX-ITS-EPA $260 million May EPA has a need for a wide range of services related to the management, operation and maintenance of its general purpose, scientific hardware/software and telecommunication resources.
