Hawaii Red-Light System Goes Live

Affiliated Computer Services Inc. is entering the enforcement phase of its public safety contract with the Hawaii Department of Transportation, the company announced Dec. 10.

ACS of Dallas won a $14 million contract with the department in July to provide and operate 32 digital cameras to catch drivers who run red lights or drive at excessive speeds.

The company's partner on the project, Poltech International Inc. of Melbourne, Australia, is providing red-light cameras, equipment and installation for the photo enforcement, as well as laser camera equipment for photo radar enforcement.

The program began Dec. 3 with a two-week warning period after which motorists will receive official citations in the mail. The fine for running a red light will be $77 if paid within 15 days and $102 if paid after 15 days, said department officials.

ACS also will provide up to eight laser cameras that will be installed in vans to catch motorists who speed over the posted limits. The laser cameras will be used on state highways as well as city streets.

ACS has about 55 red-light photo enforcement contracts in the United States and Canada, according to company officials.

Poltech provides equipment and solutions for the policing, law enforcement and security industries. ACS provides business process and technology outsourcing solutions to commercial and government clients.

ACS has 30,000 employees and had annual revenue of $2 billion in fiscal 2001, according to Hoover's Online of Austin, Texas.
