Battelle Memorial Institute won a $350 million contract to provide logistics support to the Marine Corps Chemical Biological Incident Response Force, the Army National Guard and other Defense Department, federal, state and local agencies.

The contract, awarded Nov. 1, is for five years if all options are exercised.

Among the services Battelle of Columbus, Ohio, will provide are supply chain management, spare parts procurement, equipment repair and replacement, inventory control, engineering services and worldwide transportation, housing and mess support for deployed forces.

Battelle also will develop and provide training to support chemical and biological incident responses. It will be required to sustain forces in forward combat deployments and training exercises and during national emergencies.

"We're pleased to be involved in providing technology to help the Marine Corps and the public be prepared for potential threats in these difficult and challenging times," said Battelle spokesperson Katy Delaney. She declined to provide any further details of the award.

"Of all federally funded research and development centers and quasi-research centers, Battelle is the one that has experience in biomedical," said Ray Bjorklund, vice president of Federal Sources Inc., the McLean, Va., market research and consulting firm. "This is a good win for them; this is their bread and butter."
