AMS, webMethods Win EPA Work

American Management Systems Inc. and webMethods Inc. were picked by the Environmental Protection Agency to provide integration software and services for its Office of Research and Development, the companies announced Dec. 5.

AMS of Fairfax, Va., will deploy an integration platform developed by webMethods, also of Fairfax, to streamline the office's business work-flow processes and extend the life of EPA legacy systems, AMS said.

The companies will receive a total of $400,000 for software and integration services on the project, said John Sykes, a program analyst with EPA.

Integration of the project will tie together the office's management information system, which handles laboratory work planning, budgeting and accounting, with EPA's agency-wide legacy accounting system and the Integrated Financial Management System. The latter runs on AMS' federal financial system software.

AMS is in the second year of a five-year contract valued at $17 million to provide systems development and integration for EPA's Integrated Financial Management System, said company officials.

EPA's Office of Research and Development provides scientific research to support the agency's environmental mission.

Sykes said AMS was selected for the project because of its detailed knowledge of the agency's financial systems and its 25 years of working with the agency.

Gary Labovich, vice president and manager of AMS' Environmental Systems Group, said the solution will meet the agency's integration needs and provide the flexibility to meet additional needs in the future.

"AMS' solution, combined with the webMethods integration platform, provides the flexibility to scale along with EPA's business needs," he said.

AMS has about 8,300 employees and annual revenue of $1.28 billion, while webMethods has more than 950 employees and annual revenue of $202 million.
