Treasury : All N.Y. Personnel Accounted For

All of the more than 1,300 Treasury Department employees working in the New York World Trade Center complex survived the Sept. 11 terrorist attack, according to Treasury spokesperson Tony Fratto.Fratto said some employees likely are hospitalized.Until today, the department had been unable to confirm that all personnel had been located, with officials stating that a few were still unaccounted for. The department's bureaus and divisions that had offices in the complex all report their people have been located as well.The U.S. Customs Service announced during a Sept. 14 press briefing that all of its 760 employees who worked at Building 6 of the World Trade Center and in surrounding buildings are accounted for. The Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms also have accounted for its people, spokesperson Jim Crandall said. Crandall didn't disclose how many people worked in the office, citing reasons of national security. The 180 Internal Revenue Service employees working in and around the complex have also been accounted for, IRS spokespeople Frank Keith told the Washington Post.And a spokesperson from the U.S. Secret Service, which ran a field unit in Building 7 of the complex, also reported a complete accounting of employees.For the Treasury Department, recovery from the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks is particularly challenging since many of the offices must also respond to the country's state of emergency.Since the attacks, the Customs Service has been at Alert Level 1, or "Code Red." Along with the U.S. Immigration and Naturalization Service, the service manages borders and ports of entry into the country. Other Customs personnel are supporting the FBI and other agencies in investigating the attack, and are deployed at designated airports around the country to assist the Department of Justice in increased security."We are questioning more people and looking at more goods than ever before," said Customs Service acting commissioner Charles Winwood in a prepared release.ATF Director Bradley Buckles said in an online memorandum that the bureau has more than 500 ATF special agents and forensic personnel participating in Joint Terrorism Task Force investigations throughout the Nation.Crandall was optimistic about the ATF's investigations, despite the damage incurred in New York. He would not comment on what effect the attacks had on ATF's systems. "We establish a command post and keep on working," he said.All IRS operations conducted at the World Trade Center, including those exclusively at the office, such as protests, continuous bonds and broker permits, have been relocated to existing facilities at JFK Airport and Port Elizabeth, N.J., the service said. Search and rescue operations continue at the Pentagon. As of Sept. 17, the Department of Defense reported 124 people were unaccounted for. A total of 97 remains have been recovered, of which 11 have been identified.
