The Army and Navy jointly have awarded ITT Industries Inc. two contracts to support research and development prototyping for special operations applications, the White Plains, N.Y., company announced June 6.

Each five-year contract has a ceiling value of $100 million, for a potential total of $200 million. ITT Industries' Advanced Engineering & Sciences Division, headquartered in Reston, Va., will manage the contracts as the Shuriken Technology program.

The work will be conducted on behalf of the U.S. special operations community, including the Department of Defense, federal law enforcement agencies and other government activities involved in crisis prevention and management.

The contracts cover 18 technology categories, including communications, sensors, imaging and force protection equipment on a variety of water, land and air platforms.

ITT said the resulting products and equipment could not be pre-determined, but possible applications include remote mapping of a building during a hostage situation, nighttime tracking of drug traffickers during cross-border interdiction efforts or the safe removal of explosives from a populated area.

ITT Industries' AES will manage 28 subcontracts under the program. Its partners include Raytheon Co. of Lexington, Mass., and TRW Inc. of Cleveland, as well as ITT's other four defense divisions: Night Vision, Avionics, Aerospace/Communications and Systems.

Ralph Meoni, president of ITT's AES Division, said he believes the ITT team is the single largest pool of talent ever assembled to focus on special operations.

"The multidisciplinary nature of Shuriken Technology presents a unique opportunity for innovation," said Mark Salesky, program manager for ITT Industries' AES. "We intend to serve as a rallying point for the next generation of special operations products and equipment. Our team of companies each individually produce some of the most sophisticated technology used by the community. Shuriken brings it all together in one business package."
