TRW Lands Army Logistics Deal

TRW Inc. won a six-year, $48 million contract to develop a Web-based logistics system for the Army, the company announced May 21.

If the Army exercises all options, the contract value could be as much as $400 million, said Cleveland-based TRW. The contract was awarded April 19.

The Web-based system, known as Global Combat Support System-Army Tactical, will provide both inventory management and fleet maintenance for the tactical logistics operations. The system ultimately will tie together the two Army logistic domains: retail and wholesale.

It replaces the Army's existing suite of legacy systems that provide logistics support for maintenance, supply, property accountability, ammunition and readiness management.

Computer Sciences Corp. of El Segundo, Calif., is one of six subcontractors on the TRW-led contract team. CSC will provide wholesale logistics modernization and systems engineering software development.

Other subcontractors are Innolog Inc., McLean, Va.; Lesco-Logistics Inc., Huntsville, Ala.; Synoptic Inc., Petersburg, Va.; Invictus Systems Inc., Burke, Va.; and VGS Inc., Fairfax, Va.

TRW hopes to increase the effectiveness of the new logistics system by linking it to other information systems it is developing for the Army. One of these other systems provides command and control for mission critical logistics support, while the other provides battlefield situational awareness through a digital, wireless tactical Internet.

The work will be performed in Carson, Calif., and Chester, Va., said the company.

TRW has more than 103,000 employees and had sales of $17.2 billion in fiscal 2000.
